For many years all wheelchairs were built with a steel frame which provided strength and rigidity. Steel wheelchairs are still available and are typically stronger than the more modern lightweight aluminum models.

Why pick a steel wheelchair ?

With steel wheelchairs being stronger overall they are generally considered a better buy for heavier users. Design itself is one factor that helps to increase strength and rigidity but the frame material is also key. Steel wheelchairs prove to be harder wearing and will survive knocks and bumps far better than aluminium which is a softer metal.

Most wheelchairs provided by the NHS and other institutions are made from steel to ensure that they withstand the everyday knocks without suffering structural damage. The downside of using a steel framed model is primarily the increased weight. When the chair becomes heavier it is less easy to maneuvre and to lift for storage or transportation.
