Reclining and tilting wheelchairs are becoming more commonplace and that is for good reason as they provide the ability to recline and relax in the chair without the need to be transferred to become horizontal.

Reclining wheelchairs help to relieve compression on the spine which in turn can help to relieve the associated pain. Having the option to recline in the wheelchair without the need to transfer is a great advantage for many users and leads to improved rest.

Reclining wheelchairs points to consider when you buy

In recent years more wheelchair manufacturers have opted to produce self propelled reclining models which cater toward the more able wheelchair user. This allows users to retain more independence by moving the wheelchair using the hand rims mounted on the rear wheels.

Reclining bariatric wheelchairs

Reclining bariatric wheelchairs are designed for heavier and larger users and have greater frame strength than regular models. Typically they also have puncture proof or solid tyres to avoid being let down. The frame cross bracing is often duplicated or sometimes triplicated to cope with the added user weight. Seat widths are typically wider in the bariatric or heavy duty reclining models.

Reclining wheelchairs with elevating leg rests

Reclining wheelchairs with elevating leg rests when a patient needs to recline and to keep their lower limb(s) raised then a reclining wheelchair with an elevating leg rest is needed. These leg rests are adjustable allowing you to vary the angle of the rest. Raising the limb is often more comfortable and helps to reduce swelling and throbbing. Please use the filter to select wheelchairs with elevating leg rests.

Reclining Transit wheelchairs

A reclining transit wheelchair can be reclined for comfort and support and has smaller rear wheels than a self propelled model. These are best suited to users who require a carer, friend or attendant to move their wheelchair.

Reclining self propelled wheelchairs

Reclining self propelled wheelchairs are designed for users who have more independence and are able to use the hand rims of the large rear wheels to propel themselves. The same level of comfort and support is provided and the chairs can be reclined to alleviate compression on the spine and associated discomforts.

High back wheelchairs

Reclining wheelchairs are sometimes referred to as high back wheelchairs due to the extended back cushion. These high backs are required to support the entire length of the back when the wheelchair is fully reclined to avoid pressure on the spine and vertebrae.

Reclining wheelchairs with headrests

Head rests are often integral parts of a reclining wheelchair. Along with the extended back cushion, the headrest helps to support the back and neck when the chair is used in the reclining position.

In some cases the position of the head rest and neck support can be adjusted to provide superior comfort.

Please note that not all models allow the user access to the reclining controls and therefore depend on help from an assistant. This is something to check before buying a reclining wheelchair.
