More about transit wheelchairs

The biggest selling type in the UK is the transit wheelchair. Although more able folk opt for a self propelled model, the infirm and the elderly will often prefer to rely on being pushed in a transit wheelchair.

What makes a transit wheelchair different?

The main characteristic of these models is the smaller rear wheels. As transit wheelchair users do not propel themselves then the larger wheels with hand rims are not needed. This makes transit wheelchairs less bulky to store and transport. Having smaller wheels can make them easier to maneuver on most surfaces but are less easy to negotiate steps and curb stones. All other features to look out for remain the same.

If you would like some help in selecting a model or have any other questions please speak with our wheelchair team on 0800 6335377 / 01803 872020.
