In general lightweight is good however there are times when a lightweight wheelchair is not necessarily the most suitable.
A model that is lightweight is generally easier to handle whether it is in use or not. For example folding and lifting a wheelchair in to the car boot is easier if it is lightweight. However, being lightweight also suggests that it might not be as strong as a heavier model that is made from steel.
Is lightweight always good in a wheelchair ?
Lightweight wheelchairs can also have less in the way of features like attendant brakes so it pays to check that the model you select has all that you need or you risk compromising comfort or security.
In general wheelchairs made with aluminium frames are lightweight. Aluminium is not as strong as steel so please ensure that you check the user weight is within the permitted range or you risk damage to the chair and or the user.
